Job Seekers Support Groups
My husband, James, is incredible. He has taken the bull by the horns so to speak in this job loss situation and absolutely hasn't let any grass grown under his feet. (two metaphors in one sentence, I'll try to watch that!) Not even 18 hours after finding out he lost his job, he was at a local support group for those looking for jobs. He searched out help and it is making a world of difference for him. He went to a free class the support group offered on beefing up his resume. He is doing networking and receiving support from a career coach. He is going to a class on how to use LinkedIn to improve your chances of getting a new job. He has met with a financial advisor who told him how best to use his 401K money without incurring extra penalties if we end up having to go that route. He is receiving interviewing coaching and counseling as well. Best of all, he is getting to go to a 2-day, $1200 project manager course for only $100. All because of this AWESOME support group.
James shared something with me that was interesting. It is his understanding that many people do not seek out and attend a job-loss support group until about 3-4 months into their job search. And while I am sure those people are most definitely doing job searches on their own, the invaluable information and free classes and career counseling that these support groups offer is not being given to them.
I did a really brief google search and found that by putting in "job seekers support group your town name" you will find local support groups. Many are run by local churches as an outreach ministry. James said that there was a devotion time, but most of the time and effort is spent on how to find a job. He has received great tips, suggestions and tons of support.
Please take the time to find a support group in your area if you are looking for a job and then make the time to go. The information you will receive will definitely help you get a job quicker than just going it alone! You won't regret it!!!
